The Master Gardener Program

SDSU Extension’s Master Gardener program develops gardening enthusiasts into expert volunteers who share their research-based knowledge with community members across the state. Each year, Master Gardeners volunteer thousands of hours answering citizen questions and hosting community programs.

Program Requirements
  • Apply to the program

  • Complete online and in-person coursework

  • Pass the Master Gardener course exam with a score of 80% or better

  • Once coursework is complete, the Master Gardener is considered an intern until 40 hours of volunteer hours are completed (within the first year)

  • Once the hours are complete, the individual becomes a certified Master Gardener volunteer

  • To maintain certification, volunteers must log 20 hours of service and 10 hours of training every year

2025 Master Gardener training opens April 1. Register here.
